Nature of Business TOL Gases Limited, commonly known as Tanzania Oxygen to the locals, is the Leading Manufacturer and Distributor of Industrial and Medical Gases in Tanzania. Apart from dealing with manufacturing and distribution of industrial and medical Gases, the Company is also involved in the distribution of welding products as well as medical gas equipment.

TOL Gases Limited started operating in the country in 1950 as a branch of the African Oxygen and Acetylene Company, the leading gas company in South Africa. In 1965, the Company became a branch of East African Oxygen Limited of Kenya, which was part of the BOC Gases Group. In 1978, the Company became a subsidiary of BOC Gases, a leading United Kingdom gas manufacturer and distributor, who in 1979 invited the Government of Tanzania to participate in the ownership of the Company thus converting the Company into a parastatal under the National Development Corporation (NDC) group of Companies.

The Government was offered 60% of the equity in the Company while BOC retained 40%. In 1986, BOC divested from Tanzania as part of its re –organisation. Its stake in the then Tanzania Oxygen Limited was offered to the Government through the NDC. During the period of joint ownership (1979-86), BOC managed the Company, thereafter the Company was fully owned by the Government.

During 1994 the Government indicated its intention to privatize the Company through Public share issue which would result in a significant dilution of the government’s ownership in TOL Gases Limited. In April 1998 the initial public offer was concluded making TOL Gases Limited the first Company to be listed at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange.
